I don't get their point, to be honest, Lanner's and many othres. I understand when manufacturers of small semiconductor stuff like programmable contollers or gate arrays refuse to sell them in amount fewer than 9000 items because they are hard to account in case of retail delivery. Those Lanner's and other embedded platforms aren't cheap at all, and a web store wouldn't be so hard and expensive to operate. Even those who agree to sell single item usually use the same sales model to Cisco or other large corporations. Most probable buyers of that hardware are nerds, small end-user companies and small vendors of specialized solutions. They hardly want to go through pre-sales/sales cycle, sign lots of papers and wait months to get their hardware, especially the former two and the third at initial testing stage.Maybe we just need to wait some years for things to change. 10 years ago only large corporations used to need advanced networking, nowdays even SOHO users need at least some R&S, and of course security. Hence the raise of vyatta, netfilter, quagga and many other software projects that perform functions previously available only in pricy high-end appliances. Broadly availble hardware to run all of those has to appear.
